Target Species
The Hauraki Gulf is prime breeding ground for Snapper and Kingfish - its right on our doorstep!
Snapper are our target on HALF and FULL days.
Kingfish are our target on FULL days as we can go a bit further.
Snapper
Scientific name: Pagrus auratus
Snapper are copper-pink on top with a silver-white underside and small blue dots on their sides.
They are:
most commonly found at depths of 15m to 60m but can also be found down to about 200m
most common in warmer waters around New Zealand – especially in the Hauraki Gulf
the dominant fish in northern inshore communities
at home in a wide range of habitats, including rocky reefs and areas with sandy or muddy bottoms.
Snapper mature at 3 to 4 years, when they're 20cm to 28cm long. They can live for more than 60 years and grow up to 105cm. They release many batches of eggs all through spring and summer.
Kingfish
Scientific name: Seriola lalandi lalandi
Kingfish are green on top with a white underside and a green-gold band along their side. About 75% of all kingfish caught in New Zealand are caught by recreational fishers.
Kingfish are:
most common in the northern half of the North Island but are found from the Kermadec Islands to Foveaux Strait
found in open coastal waters, preferring high currents or tidal flows near rocky outcrops, reefs, and pinnacles
sometimes found in areas with an open sandy bottom and in shallow, enclosed bays.
Kingfish are large predator fish. Adults grow to over 1.5m in length. They usually live in schools ranging from a few fish to well over 100. Recreationally caught kingfish average 10kg, but can be more than 30kg.
